What is CBT-E?
CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a transdiagnostic outpatient treatment developed by Christopher Fairburn and colleagues at Oxford University. It is designed for adults with any eating disorder — anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating/OSFED.
CBT-E targets the specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that maintain the eating disorder: over-evaluation of shape and weight, dietary restraint, binge eating, purging, perfectionism, and low self-esteem. It is structured, time-limited, and highly effective.
A standard CBT-E course is 20 sessions over 20 weeks. A longer 40-session format is available for more complex presentations, including significant underweight.
